How Commute and Overtime Unbalance Your Life Work Balance
You must have read a lot of articles saying that working 5 days a week or doing overtime work is a bad thing to do. Is that true?
Here I am trying to spread our week hourly. This is what I found. In a week, we spend:
56 hours (33%) - bed time
40% work-related hours
40 hours (24%) - work
5 hours (3%) - lunch at work
12 hours (7%) - overtime
10 hours (6%) - commute
27% life-related hours
18 hours (18%) - weekend
15 hours (9%) - home time
Clearly we spend more time in work-related hours than spending time for our life. But if we look closely, only 24% of actual work is needed.

So where were the hours gone? As I mentioned, we do commuting and overtime over 20 hours (every person may vary). This is where we waste our time.
Sweden that has tried to cut 8 hours work to 6 hours or some work place that only has 4 days work instead of 5 now make sense. They can cut your 40% work related hours so you'll find balance.
I personally prefer the 4 days work, because they are not only cut the work time, but also the commute time.
Well, not every place apply those rules. For those unlucky, you can try to cut this by finding closer place to live, or say no to your boss for extra money. But if you can't afford any of it, try enjoy your commute time by playing with your smartphone, or add up your life hour budget for long annual leave.
Hope you'll find your balance.
